The Open Cup is open to all US Soccer–affiliated clubs regardless of division, making it one of the few competitions where lower-league sides can face top professional clubs. Memorable upsets have included the 1999 Rochester Raging Rhinos defeating MLS Colorado Rapids for the title — the last non-top-tier winner in the modern era.
